چکیده

The wide-spread proliferation of smartphone-like devices has caused a tremendous increase in mobile data usage unmatched by the slower increasing available bandwidth. Consequently, this has caused severe traffic overloading in cellular networks. An immediate available remedy for this problem is offloading the traffic through WiFi access points. In this paper, we study the deployment and recruitment of WiFi access points (AP) in a metropolitan area for efficient offloading of mobile data traffic. We analyze a large scale real user mobility traces and propose a deployment algorithm based on the density of user data access requests. With simulation results, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve close to optimal offloading ratio that is higher than offloading ratios achievable by the existing algorithms using the same number of APs. Moreover, we also show that remarkably high offloading ratios can be achieved through recruitment of APs available in the area without new deployments.

An Iterative Double Auction Mechanism for Mobile Data Offloading

Mobile data offloading through complementary network technologies such as WiFi and femtocell can significantly alleviate network congestion and enhance users’ QoS. In this paper we consider a market where mobile network operators (MNOs) lease third-party deployed WiFi or femtocell access points (APs) to dynamically offload the traffic of their mobile users. We assume that each MNO can employ mu...

MFW: Mobile Femtocells utilizing WiFi

The ever growing data traffic generated by users in cellular networks is becoming more challenging and straining for cellular operators. Thus, developing efficient mechanisms that enable cellular operators to offload data traffic from their networks in a cost-effective manner is essential. To this end, we propose a generic framework (MFW) that exploits femtocells and WiFi networks. The framewor...

Incentive Mechanisms for Motivating Mobile Data Offloading in Heterogeneous Networks: A Salary-Plus-Bonus Approach

In this paper, a salary-plus-bonus incentive mechanism is proposed to motivate WiFi Access Points (APs) to provide data offloading service for mobile network operators (MNOs). Under the proposed salary-plus-bonus scheme, WiFi APs are rewarded not only based on offloaded data volume but also based on the quality of their offloading service. The interactions between WiFi APs and the MNO under thi...

A Measurement of Mobile Traffic Offloading

A promising way to use limited 3G mobile resources efficiently is 3G mobile traffic offloading through WiFi by the user side. However, we currently do not know enough about how effective the mobile traffic offloading is in the wild. In this paper, we report the results of a two-day-long user-based measurement of mobile traffic offloading by over 400 android smartphone users in Japan. We first e...
